  • Purpose:

    The Global Collaboratory for Information Society Development in Africa The primary mission of the Collaboratory is to leverage the combined resources of selected strategic partners in South Africa, Africa and around the world to build increased intellectual and technical capacity within all societal sectors of South Africa and Africa for effective participation in the Global Information Society. Based on the resultsof a feasibility study undertaken by the CSIR, the business strategyfor the Collaboratory includes the following three elements:(1) Strengthening the institutional capacity of historically disadvantaged educational and training institutions within South Africa and throughout the region;(2) Contributing to building human capacity in South Africa and the region through the involvement of fellows, associates and interns in the collaborative Information Society projects in association with its strategic partners and universities;(3)Addressing the challenges of implementing the African Information Society Initiative (AISI) by involving experts in the Collaboratory to implement Information Society projects and deliver services throughout the region.The Collaboratory will focus initially on ten Information Society Themes.(1)Cultural Heritage Preservation(2)ICTs and Education(3)Community Empowerment(4)Digital Libraries and Electronic Publishing(5)Electronic Commerce(6)Environmental Information Systems/Geographic Information Systems(7)Government Services(8)Gender and ICTs(9)Globalization and Information Society Policy(10)Information Society Professional DevelopmentEach of these theme areas is supported by a Virtual Working Group (VWG)and virtual project teams.
