Purpose:
The decision to found the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property was made at the 9th UNESCO General Conference in New Delhi in 1956 at a time when the need for stricter guidelines for the protection of cultural heritage was gaining universal recognition.
During 2002 - 2003, ICCROM will prepare a status report on the current understanding of best practices in archival conservation, with special reference to non-paper-based collections (i.e. digital materials). The report will draw upon the results of research and practical experience in different parts of the world and will highlight aspects relevant to formulating sustainable preservation policies for archives.
Archival collections
Building on ICCROM's past experience of training in archival conservation, and in collaboration with partners such as the International Council on Archives (ICA), ICCROM will design a long-term project including courses for professionals in key preservation positions in institutions with archival holdings. The courses will address both theoretical and practical issues, develop teamwork and communication skills, and encourage national, regional and international networking for the implementation of sustainable preservation policies in archives. Training activities will be backed up by the production of specific reference material on the Internet.
The first course will be organized in 2003 in the Caribbean and will contribute to the process of strengthening institutional and professional capacity in the region. Further courses, building on the latter, have been planned for Africa and Asia between 2004 and 2008. Experience gained from these courses will be pooled to create an international course. The whole project is part of a collaborative strategy with partner institutions in different parts of the world to encourage Member States to respond to the needs of the archival sector.

The intergovernmental organization, now known as ICCROM, was established in Rome in 1959. It occupies a unique position in being the only institution with a worldwide mandate to promote the conservation of both movable and immovable heritage in all its forms. It currently comprises over 100 Member States, as well as 103 associate members from among the world's leading conservation institutions.
ICCROM aims at improving the quality of conservation as well as raising people's awareness of it in all walks of life, schoolchildren and politicians alike. It aspires, through conservation, to make cultural heritage benefit humanity.
ICCROM contributes to preserving cultural heritage in the world today and for the future through five main spheres of activity:
