      Materials housed in the Arquivo Histórico were largely destroyed or disorganized in the politico-military conflict of 1998-99. Only 300 linear metres of documents were untouched during the archive's occupation by Senegalese soldiers. About 2800 out of 7000 photographs remain neither destroyed nor damaged. Restoration efforts for the salvagable material have been underway since early 1999.
