The library is named after David Don, a Durban businessman, whose Africana collection was donated to the Durban Public Library in 1916. This bequest forms the nucleus of the present collection of rare books, maps, pamphlets and journals. The collection continues to grow, with the bulk of new acquisitions comprising current monographs, journals and government publications. Areas of specialization include: History, Law, Literature, Politics and Government, and Education. Back copies of the Daily News, Natal Mercury, Illanga Iase Natal, Sunday Tribune and Natal Witness are held on microfilm. Dates range from 17th c. to present day. Catalogue available on NISC African Studies CD-ROM.
